Every night we download the current copy of each government database we cover and compare it, record by record, with the night before. This page is the count of what that comparison found — so you can see that the check runs, and how much the government's files move.

Every record the night's files added, removed or edited: permits, violations, inspections, enforcement actions, spill reports. Counters that move on their own, such as days since the last inspection, are left out.

Points where two government files say different things about the same permit or site — a state registry against EPA, or two of EPA's own files — found for the first time that night. The first count of a newly added check is not shown as new.

How to read the charts

Each gridline is ten times the one below it. One night can be five hundred times another, and on an ordinary scale every quiet night would be a sliver.
The tall bars are EPA's weekly files landing. EPA publishes most of its databases once a week; OSHA, the spill reports and the cleanup lists move every night. The tallest bars are EPA re-publishing a whole file at once.
A short tick on the baseline is a night we checked and found nothing. A dashed box is a night with no check. We never draw a missing night as a zero.
Disagreements arrive on two clocks. EPA's files are set against each other every night; the state registries are set against EPA once a week, so those land on one night in seven.
A night's row can still grow the next day. The weekly state comparison finishes after the night's own count, and is added the following night. Days are UTC.
